Gutters

Gutters are an essential rain defense system for your home

Although often overlooked, gutters provide a line of defense against all sorts of problems caused by heavy rainwater flows: foundation erosion, basement flooding, and landscaping damage. Knowing when gutters need to be installed or replaced will go a long way in keeping your home in great shape. This guide will explain what gutters do, how they are installed, the different types available, some of the common problems they fix, and how to know when a home needs new gutters.

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO

Gutters are designed to catch the rainwater and channel water into the downspouts, directing it away from the foundation.

PREVENT FOUNDATION EROSION

Too much rainwater accumulating around the foundation of your home under the roof line causes erosion of the soil around the foundations and, over time, will compromise its stability. Gutters funnel rainwater to a specific single flow point via the downspout preventing soil erosion around the foundations.

PROTECT ROOF AND FASCIA BOARDS

Water running unabated from the edge of the roof can damage fascia boards and shingles. Gutters catch the water and guide it away, preserving the structural integrity of your roof.

SAFEGUARD LANDSCAPING

Heavy rain can easily ruin flowerbeds, plants, and other landscaping features around the roofline of your home. Properly working gutters ensure that rainwater will not wreak havoc in your outdoor areas.

The Gutter Installation Process

Step #1 Removing the Old Gutters

If the home already has existing gutters, the first step in the process is carefully removing the old system. This would also include taking off the gutters, brackets, and downspouts without any damage to the roof and fascia boards.

Step #2 Examine Fascia and Roof Edge

Before the new gutters are installed, the fascia board is inspected for rot or damage. Any problems are fixed, or replaced, to ensure there is a solid framework to install the new gutters.

Step #3 Measure and Prepare Materials

Accurately measure the required lengths of gutter sections required. These sections are cut and prepared according to the dimensions and shape of the roof line.

Step #4 Installing Gutter Brackets

Brackets are then attached at regular intervals in the fascia to securely hold up the gutters. Proper spacing is crucial to handle the weight of heavy rainfall.

Step #5 Install the Gutters

The gutter sections are firmly attached to the prepared brackets. Seams are treated with sealants to block leaking and to ensure watertight systems.

Step #6 Downspouts Installation

Downspouts are attached to the gutters and placed in a way that water will be directed away from the foundation. Extensions may be added to direct water further away.

Step #7 Testing and Touchups

After a successful installation, test the system. Run water through the gutters to see if it flows properly and there are no leaks. Make adjustments or patch-fixes where necessary. This is the general breakdown of the steps involved in a gutter replacement. However, every home is different, and may require additional adjustments, or a different approach. What are the Types of Gutter Systems?

K style gutters

K-Style Gutters

The flat-back design enables them to sit flush against the fascia boards, providing excellent functionality with an eye-pleasing aesthetic.

Half-Round Gutters

The traditional half-round gutter. Most of the time you’ll see them attached to the older homes or historic houses. While these gutters add charm, they may not handle heavy rainfall as effectively as K-style gutters.

Seamless Gutters

Seamless gutters are custom-made to the size of your home, making leaks far less likely. These are perfect for regions that get heavy rainfall during the wet season.

Vinyl Gutters

Lightweight and relatively inexpensive, vinyl gutters are easier to install but perhaps less capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions than their metal counterparts.

Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum is a popular choice due to its resistance to corrosion, lightweight design, and variety of color options. It does well most in any climate.

The Advantages of Gutters for Your Home

  • Prevent Water Damage: Fixing a foundation is expensive and water damage can be so extensive after a season of heavy rain that your home may not be salvageable and require a complete refurbishment of the foundations. Why risk it when you can fit gutters and safeguard your home against foundation damage?
  • Stop Basement Flooding: The gutters channel water away from the foundations preventing it from absorbing into the ground and leaking into the basement.
  • Prevent Erosion: Uncontrolled water flow may erode the soil around your home, affecting the landscaping and other structural components like paths and walkways.
  • Stop Ice Dams: If properly maintained and cleaned, the gutters prevent the formation of ice dams in your roof. Ice dams can cause extensive damage to the roof and the gutters causing the need for replacement of the entire system.

When Gutters Should Be Replaced

Knowing when to replace your gutters is critical to maintaining their efficacy. Here are some signs it’s time to consider a new system.

  • Visible Damage: Gutter performance in channeling water may be compromised by cracks, rust, or holes.
  • Sagging or Pulling Away: Sagging or gutters detaching from the fascia boards indicates weakened brackets or structural issues.
  • Frequent Leakages: Persistent leaks, despite repair work, demonstrate that the system is at the end of its service life.
  • Pooling Water: If water pools around your foundation, your gutters may be clogged or improperly pitched.
  • Roof Replacement: It’s best practice to replace the gutters when installing a new roof.

FAQs About Gutters

How often should gutters be replaced?

Gutters should be cleaned a minimum of once in the spring and fall, ideally twice a year. Houses with a lot of trees around may require cleaning more frequently.

Gutter guards are worth the investment if you want to reduce clogs of leaves and debris in the downspouts and stop pest infestations that could become problematic in the future. They reduce maintenance and prolong the service life of your gutters.

While installing gutters to your roof can be a DIY job, professional installation ensures proper alignment and secure mounting for a longer-lasting, fully guaranteed system.

Durability, price, climate, and existing materials on the home are all important factors to consider when choosing a material for your home’s gutters. Aluminum is extremely durable, well-priced, and rust resistant. Seamless gutters constructed in any material are the most reliable systems.

The lifespan of the system depends on the materials. Aluminum gutters will generally last 20-30 years, and vinyl gutters may last 10-20 years.

Yes. Overall, seamless gutters offer better flow and leak protection and they require less maintenance compared to conventional sectional gutters.
