The Jacksonville Beach Pier is one of the most iconic parts of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The pier has withstood many storms throughout its history, with the most recent damage coming from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Click here for more info about Jax beach storms and weather.
Since then it has been rebuilt 303 feet longer and slightly higher which will hopefully help it withstand future storms. It has also been reconstructed in a way that makes it handicap and wheel-chair accessible. While the Jacksonville Beach Pier does not have tourist attractions like the ferris wheels or arcades of other famous piers, or fun parks like Adventure Landing, it still has its own attractions.
The number one thing that people head to the Jacksonville Beach Pier to do is fish. This quarter of a mile long pier has plenty of real estate to stake your claim and set up your poles. One of the big advantages of fishing off of the Jacksonville Beach Pier is that they do not require a Florida saltwater fishing license. This will come as a relief to those who know how much fishing licenses cost. Instead they charge a flat rate of $4.00 per person with a limit of three rods each. Before you head out to fish, it is important that you check the specific types of fish that you may catch and what their limits are to avoid any fines from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The second thing that people enjoy at the Jacksonville Beach Pier is people watching. It only cost $1.00 per person per day for entry onto the pier if you are not fishing. This means that for $1.00 you have access to a quarter mile of people watching. You can find yourself a piece of the railing and watch all the people fishing rejoice when they bring up their catch. You can watch the couples walking hand in hand down the pier. If you listen closely, you are sure to overhear some interesting conversations as people shoot the breeze while they fish. You can also watch people of all ages come together in this place under the beautiful Florida skies to fish and spend time together which is sure to provide plenty of entertainment from your day.
The third best thing to do at the Jacksonville Beach Pier requires getting up early, or staying late. The Jacksonville Beach Pier is a perfect place to watch the sunrise or sunset. If you want to see the sun push up from below the Atlantic Ocean and start the day, there is no better place than a quarter of a mile out in the Atlantic Ocean on the pier. This gives you an uninterrupted view of the rising sun to start your day. If you are not a morning person and have no interest in getting to the pier even before the sun does, then you can stay late to watch the sun set. Since the sun sets in the west, you will not be able to watch the sunset over the water, but you will get to look back on the Jacksonville Beach city skyline and see the sun set behind that, or watch as the sunset paints the sky above the ocean.
